Scarborough's South Bay from the castle headland, refreshed every minute

The view of Scarborough's South Bay (North Yorkshire, United Kingdom) over the old town from the castle headland, facing South-East, refreshed every minute.

(If there's no image, try refreshing the page).

I've updated this (27 Jan 2007): Behind the first promontory is Cayton Bay. Halfway along the next bit of land is another bit that sticks out, which I now think is Red Cliff Point.

The far left point is Filey Brigg, a path of rocks that goes maybe 700 metres out to sea and appears at low tide. I think it's possible to walk out on it but I've never done it and don't sue me if you die in the attempt. It's visible to the naked eye from here, but the camera's image quality's really not good enough to appreciate that and actually I took a pic on zoom with my usual digital (which must be five years old or so now) and it's not terribly visible on that either. On a clear day you can see another piece of land behind that that sticks out even further, that's Flamborough Head. The lighthouse there flickers against our bedroom ceiling on a clear summer's night.

If you're interested, I ran perhaps half of the far cliffs that you can see and took photographs along the way, see my blog here (scroll down past the first three pics).

If you fancy putting together some monitoring or security camera system that's Internet based (so you can check your cameras from wherever you are, receive emails if something moves .. that sort of thing), or if you'd just like a webcam, or maybe you need to monitor, for instance, some major construction work, a shopfloor or traffic conditions or just get a picture from home while you're away on business* then get in touch.

If I see the camera capture something worthwhile, I've started saving them in a Best Of page.

Incidentally, now that I'm watering the window boxes there's a 1 in 1,440 chance you'll catch an image looking down my ear after I've opened the window on which this camera is mounted and I bend forward to water the plants. Gosh, it's like the early days of the Internet all over again, remember the coffee pot?

People seem to like it, I'm starting to get cam-fan-mail: David said "I must just say that I love the view as it reminds me of the many, many visits I have made to Scarborough", Steve said "I visit every day", Estelle said "Beautiful webcam. My best friend is on holiday there right now and I am having a look at where she is from South Africa!", Carol said "Just to let you know what a brilliant web cam you have. I look on it every day. I was brought up in Scarborough and now live in Wales. Keep up the good work".

When I knocked the camera one day I got two emails within a couple of hours pointing it out and asking me to put it right again.

* just to be clear, any camera I install would have to be with the full consent of all concerned, don't ask me for a secret surveillance camera.

Coming to Scarborough?

I've worked on a fair few accommodation websites, met the people, wandered around and taken photographs of the rooms, and am happy to recommend: The Selomar Hotel, Brompton Holiday Flats, Bramblewick Guest House, Carlton Family Guest House, The Lynton Guest House and Cosy Beamed Cottage.

You might also like to visit The Tin Shop in the market vaults for antique tins, signs and unusual gifts, right next door, Cafe Heart for gorgeous food (try the hot chocolate), and Fantasy Forest (Olympia) (seaside amusements and bowling alley). I'm not saying you are, but if you are into large dresses, The Ladies Dresser is for you, or perhaps more your thing, Arrow Models and Toys for loads of fun things especially radio controlled models. Peter Brewer Goldsmith jeweller is well worth exploring too if you can handle the walk .. walk up Westborough towards the railway station and keep walking into Falsgrave, he's just after Sainsbury's on the right.

Take a look at the Scarborough directory, NearToU.com too.
