Case Study 3 - Student Dissertations and Theses

I have worked on countless dissertations and theses over the years. I began by typing them back in the 1980s but, as students gradually found computers to be more accessible, they started typing up their own work. I really didn't notice any difference in work demand, though, as they still needed someone to check over their typing after they'd completed it.

Nowadays, my expertise is in demand mostly by international students, whose first language is not English. It is comforting for them to know that their work has been read by a native English speaker, so that it reads more naturally. I have covered various topics, including sociology, engineering, medicine/nursing, literature, computer science and business studies. Students approaching me are usually from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, although I do get the occasional English student!

I know I've done a good job when they return to me for their next piece of work. A few years ago, I read six MA dissertations in August for some students from Taiwan. They rewarded me by putting me onto their 'Hello UK!' website: www.hellouk.org
