I have assisted with conferences in many places over the years.
I worked in the University of Nottingham's International Office for six years, during which time I helped to organise the Welcome Programme for approximately 2,000 students every September. This involved taking details such as students' country of origin, their course, liaising with the Accommodation Office for their term-time accommodation, liaising with the Halls of Residence regarding their Welcome Week accommodation and assisting with the arrangements for the Welcome Week calendar and its events. There was always a formal dinner towards the end of the week, which was hugely popular and a chance for everyone to meet and get to know one another.
Recently, I was involved in organising a two-day Sure Start Conference in Nottingham. It was held at a local hotel, which meant that delegates could arrive the night before and take advantage of the available overnight accommodation, thereby enabling a leisurely start to day one. I was heavily involved in all communications with the hotel, delegates, technicians, registration assistants, exhibitors and speakers. I am pleased to report that the organisers were very pleased with the smooth running of the event - enough to ask me to assist with another course the following year.
I assisted with the organising of a follow-up day to the Sure Start Conference. This was held at the University of Nottingham's Conference Centre, giving access to necessary equipment and catering. I was involved in designing the application form, the process of pre-registering, the actual registration, and passing on the payments to the finance department, as well as dealing with individual requests as they occurred.
After a conference a few years ago, I wrote a poem, which just about sums it all up!
